Building sustainable communities through integrated development programs.
"Sustainable poverty elimination will be achieved only if external support focuses on what matters to people, understands the difference between groups of people, and works with them in a way that is congruent with their current livelihood strategies, social environment, and ability to adapt."- Ashely and Carney, 1999
BEC as a non-profit organization has made significant contributions towards rural and township development in the Eastern Cape and South Africa. Our work focuses on sustainable community empowerment through various integrated programs. BEC is dedicated to fostering socio-economic development and improving the quality of life in underserved rural areas and townships across South Africa. Established with the core philosophy of 'Ubuntu' – "I am because we are" – BEC believes in community-led development, empowering local residents to be agents of their own change. This holistic approach addresses critical needs in education, economic empowerment, infrastructure, and health.

BEC has given its students work experience in professional consulting roles. Our students served as construction managers, project managers, and quantity surveyors, delivering high-stakes documents to prominent clients.
Addressing the lack of sanitary water in the Eastern Cape was a critical component of BEC's work. In collaboration with Viva Con Agua, BEC spearheaded Project Washalot in Bulungula, Eastern Cape, from design to the installation of handwashing units - Washalots, rainfall harvesting systems, Jojo Tanks and water channels in Bulungula's school, significantly improving access to clean water and sanitation.
In March of 2024, BEC built and refurbished a community centre and rural office that served as multi-purpose venues for meetings, training, and social gatherings, fostering community cohesion in Bulungula Village. During this project, one of our students completed his vacation work there.
Everyone needs a "third place" beyond home and work – a space for connection and recreation. By refurbishing and rebuilding youth centers, BEC creates exactly this: a vibrant hub where community members can congregate and commune. This fosters genuine social cohesion, effectively binding society together. It enables people to live harmoniously, share common values, and cooperate for mutual well-being and prosperity.
Since its inception, BEC Initiative has positively impacted over a 100 individuals across various provinces. Our success lies in our commitment to:
Ensuring that beneficiaries are actively involved in the planning and implementation of projects, fostering ownership and sustainability.
Collaborating with local government, other NGOs, private sector entities, and traditional leaders to leverage resources and expertise.
Regularly assessing the effectiveness of our programs and adapting strategies based on feedback and outcomes.
We're continuously developing new initiatives to expand our impact. Contact us to learn more about upcoming projects and how you can get involved.
